PROFESSIONAL FARRIER SCIENCE CERTIFICATION PROGRAM

Tuition Cost: 6wk Working horseshoer course $5,000., 12wk Certified Farrier course $9,000., Tradesman 24wk course $15,000.

Professional Farrier 36wk course $22,500 per yr *requires 2.5 yr commitment and/or apprenticeship .

Schedule: Daily 6 hour sessions 6 days a week

March-November

The Farrier Science Program is for those 16 yrs and older  who want to learn the science, skills, techniques and applications of Horse shoeing, classes are held daily 5 days week with 2 hour lecture and open classes for forging and shoeing.

American Farriers Definition professional farrier is 

a highly skilled specialist in equine hoof care who combines blacksmithing skills with veterinary knowledge to maintain, balance, and protect horse hooves. They are responsible for cleaning, trimming, and shoeing horses, as well as applying corrective, therapeutic, or protective devices to improve movement and soundness.

Core Responsibilities and Skills

  • Hoof Maintenance: Regular trimming and balancing of the hoof to ensure proper gait and prevent lameness.

  • Shoeing: Fabricating (forging) or selecting, shaping, and applying shoes made of steel, aluminum, or synthetic materials.

  • Anatomical Knowledge: Understanding the anatomy, physiology, and pathology of the horse's lower limbs to identify disease or lameness.

  • Corrective Care: Applying specialized shoes or techniques to correct gait faults, conformational issues, or to aid in the healing of injured/diseased hooves.

Professional Characteristics

  • Certification: Many professional farriers hold certifications from organizations like the American Farrier’s Association (AFA), which verifies their knowledge of hoof care and anatomy.

  • Collaboration: They frequently work alongside veterinarians to manage complex cases.

  • Physical Demands: The role requires working in various weather conditions, handling horses, and performing strenuous physical labor (bending, lifting).
